I recently did a little in-service for elementary teachers (K-3) where I introduced them to Wolfram|Alpha. Many came in with the here is another in-service look on their face. I showed them the introductory video and I let them share what they thought about it while the video was playing. Some were smug, others stated that this wouldn’t apply to them. That is the point where I broke in with my questions. How many of your students know how to access the internet? How many of your students already know how to use a cell phone? What makes you think that some of them wouldn’t be able to use this site? What will you as educators be teaching your students in the next five years? Will you still be teaching them math facts and having them memorize formulas, or will your teaching change to fit the needs of your students? My last question to them as they left was how far behind your students will you be in a few years?
