    I am Will Smith, a student in EDM310 at the University of South Alabama. Part One of this post is probably the most overlooked question in education today. Much too often do educators want to add something to classrooms simply because it is “new”. Before we look to add anything to education, we should first look for a reason to add it. I love the quote “don’t fix whats not broke”. While there are many areas of education we could improve, there are some we should leave alone because they are working just fine.

  2. 1. “Because it’s there” is always a good enough answer for question number one.

    2. Replicative technologies cannot be meaningfully incorporated. Transformative technologies can only be meaningfully incorporated.

    • 1. Not really, unless you’re living in a world of rainbows, unicorns, and endless resources. Most leaders on Earth are still forced to prioritize.

    Hi Scott,

    My name is Alexandra Rothacker, and I am currently getting my M.Ed. in ESL at Marymount University. For my ED 554 (technology) class, we have had to follow a blog. After looking over a few I picked your blog as I find it to be compelling, funny, and educational!

    I think that Part 1 of this post is extremely important! I think that it is ALWAYS important to make lessons relevant to the students’ lives. Unfortunately, I feel that as teachers we do not tend to focus on this as much when teaching by means of technology, as we probably feel that the students will automatically connect with the material since students love technology so much. I believe that assumption to be incorrect, as our students really only like technology that they WANT to do, not ALL technology… So yes, they like Facebook, YouTube, iPods, iPads, cell phones, and Pandora — but that doesn’t mean that they will automatically like what we are teaching them to do on a computer because it is using technology. To us, computers are still new technology, but to them they have always been around and are therefore not necessarily exciting.
