Another installment of my ongoing
series of half-finished (and quite possibly half-baked) thoughts that are
running through my head…
Meetings
- Stand up and save time? I am guessing some (many?) school meetings would
benefit from this
no-chairs approach. - This
picture is a great metaphor for how it should be. - I appreciate Scott
Berkun’s honesty regarding effective meeting management.
The Adminwall
I really like Jeff Utecht’s term, the “Adminwall.” This is
exactly what
I was talking about way back when (my first post ever!).
School culture
How fabulous would it be if schools’ organizational cultures were like
this?
And where
do YOUR administrators park?
Imagination is dangerous
For all those of us who think schools should foster imagination and
creativity, The Onion gives
us fair warning…
Did You Know?
Karl
Fisch and I keep getting e-mails about Did You
Know? I actually met someone today who hasn’t seen
it!
- This YouTube
version has LOTS of hits - Variation: Did
You Know? II - Variation: Wusstest du?
- Variation: Do
You Realize? - Variation: Boring Videos
Happen
Also on the small screen
A couple of videos worth watching:

LeaderTalk
Last, but definitely not least, LeaderTalk is off to a great start. If you
haven’t checked it out yet, it’s a hoppin’ place…
Have a great weekend, everyone.
Funny you mentioned it — I saw “Boring Videos Happen” on YouTube yesterday and was going to write a post about how much I appreciate a good satire. But, alas, it had one line in particular that, for me, went a bit too far in making the point about what you could do in 6 minutes.
Anyway – TGIF!
I love this quote at the end of the Onion article:
Added McMillan: “Remember, if you see a single sparkle of excitement in their eyes, you haven’t done enough.”
On the meetings, this year picked up a format for 10 minute meetings from my union local. This is a wonderful format for “voluntary” meetings where you have to make people want to come to the meeting because they don’t have to go there. My husband who works at a non-profit and has a lot of community/community partner meetings has picked it up.
What is the research on meeting attention and drawing/knitting/needlepoint, etc. I like to knit at meetings, but I had a consultant insist it was unprofessional and that studies show you can’t concentrate, etc. I figure if anyone would know they’d be here (it still may be unprofessional).
Hm. If any of these could ever make it out of the half-baked stage, I’d be most interested in your response to the satire and criticism of “Did You Know?”
I mean, if you think accusations of tedium are unfounded, then why? If you think they have merit then what are you or Fisch or anyone doing about it?
Thank you so much for the mention of my blog on your blog and my piece on “stand up meetings.” You too have such great reading, I enjoyed moving through your site. I’ll come back, too.
