2009 Fall ISU Classes

In Fall 2009 I will be teaching two classes online (asynchronous with some optional synchronous elements). Please if you are interested in one or both of the courses below. Registration is by instructor permission only. Thanks!

EDADM 575 XW, Education Law and Ethics (3 credits; August 31 to December 13)

The syllabus, plan, and assessment(s) for this course will be co-created between students and myself. Content coverage typically has included traditional school law topics such as student speech and expression, search and seizure, religion and schools, being sued, curriculum and censorship, teacher privacy, academic freedom, corporal punishment, etc. I can promise that discussion will be lively and will greatly challenge students’ thinking. I am planning on creating some new multimedia elements for this course. I also am hoping that we’ll identify some guest speakers that we can pull in for webinars that will extend our learning.

EDADM 554 XW, Leading School Reform (DDDM) (3 credits; August 31 to December 13)

The syllabus, plan, and assessment(s) for this course will be co-created between students and myself. Content coverage typically has included identification of quality baseline data, professional learning communities, student progress monitoring, good formative assessment, and the use of various technological systems for data management and analysis. I am hoping that we’ll take a problem-solving approach to this course; many of these elements of data-driven school practice already are happening in participants’ school systems but aren’t necessarily happening well. Students also will have the option to ramp up their personal ability to organize and analyze student data through use of CASTLE’s School Data Tutorials web site. I can promise that discussion will be lively and will greatly challenge students’ thinking. I am planning on creating some new multimedia elements for this course. I also am hoping that we’ll identify some guest speakers that we can pull in for webinars that will extend our learning.

More information

Iowa State University is one of the leading research universities in the country and is a member of the AAU. ISU is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

These are Master’s-level credits suitable for education licensure renewal. They also are suitable as transfer credits for ISU’s or other universities’ P-12 educational leadership programs.

ISU’s tuition for 3 credits of online graduate-level coursework is $1,122. You’ll also have to pay fees that should range from $46 to $168 (for most students, it should only be $46). If you take 6 credits of online coursework, tuition is $2,244 and fees should range from $69 to $345 (for most students, it should only be $69). Students that take 6 credits of coursework may be eligible for financial aid; contact ISU’s Financial Aid Office to find out more.

About the instructor

I have been teaching Master’s- and doctoral-level courses in P-12 educational leadership for ten years now and have extensive experience teaching in hybrid and/or wholly-online formats. My teaching evaluations typically are in the 4.7 – 5.0 range on a scale of 1 to 5. I was the first untenured professor to ever win the University of Minnesota College of Education and Human Development Distinguished Teaching Award

School technology leadership courses

When I was at the University of Minnesota, I co-created the first graduate program designed to prepare technology-savvy school leaders [it was the first academic program based on the National Educational Technology Standards for Administrators (NETS-A)]. We ran four cohorts through that program before I came to ISU and it was a phenomenal experience for both the students and myself. The people in that program were incredible and I was very blessed to have the chance to work with them.

In Spring 2010 (a year later than originally planned), CASTLE will begin offering its online school technology leadership courses again here at ISU. If you’re interested, more information is here.
