Ouch! This is not new knowledge but it still is something that EVERY teacher and administrator should listen to before the start of the next school year.

Thanks for posting it, Scott! I begin my summer at the end of today and will be thinking hard on how to "replace" this culture in my own teaching practice. Looking forward to listening to the rest of the presentation.

Scott,
I took you up on the dare. It's not enough to listen to it. I will pass it along with remixed Did You Know? (XPLANE version)to all the administrators in my town.
It's my hope that it will "stick" somewhere...
As always, thanks for all you do and share with us.

Watched it. Not pretty. Will have some thoughts on my blog.

Scott, to improve dissemination, I would love to have this on Teacher Tube (not blocked on my district, as You Tube is).

Thanks.

Only 'cause I can't resist a dare.

"You don't change a culture like this. You replace it. You take it out and you put something else in its place."

I wonder if you're a little more militant than I ever gave you credit for.

I watched and listened... eye opening? Absolutely! Reality? Yes! I listened and I couldn't help but pull out Kathy Sierra's graphic about "Incremental vs. Revolutionary Improvements." (http://headrush.typepad.com/creating_passionate_users/)
And the big 'fricken' wall is made up of so many different things that you can't possibly dismantle it, you have to blow it completely apart, which is what Elmore's point was in the first place.

Now the question becomes, how do you blow it apart? There are too many people that are protective of the current schema of education that doing something this radical would cause them to lose their...
- position.
- power.
- market share.
- status.
- jobs.
- wealth.
and the list could go on and on.

That's a great speech...

It's very hard for me to relate to only in that I have little detailed idea how things are going in Scottish schools. I do know however that there has been increased emphasis in the last decade on national tests and assessments (and reportedly increasing amounts of both teaching to the test and students being re-directed to 'easier' subjects to keep pass rates up). We've quite likely been moving in the wrong direction in many ways.
